Dubai – Mubasher: The UAE has been elected as a member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for the fourth consecutive term.
Following contested elections, the UAE managed to secure a seat in the ITU’s Region E - Asia and Australasia after garnering 164 votes.
Along with the UAE, Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand were elected as ITU members in Area E.
The announcement was made after the elections were held at the Plenipotentiary Conference 2018, which was hosted by the UAE between 29 October and 16 November 2018 at the Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC).
This is the first time for the conference is held in the Middle East, which reflects the ITU leadership’s and Member States’ confidence in the UAE’s ability to achieve the success through the hosting of this major event.
Taking place every four years, the event targets setting the ITU’s general policies and adopting four-year strategic and financial plans.
