Suez Canal revenues hit $5.61bn in 2020

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt generated $5.61 billion in revenue from the Suez Canal in 2020, down from $5.8 billion in 2019, the Head of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabea, said.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the canal recorded the third highest revenue in its history, compared to $5 billion generated in 2016 when oil prices registered one of its largest declines and $4.29 billion in 2009 which witnessed the global financial crisis, Rabea pointed out in a statement on Sunday.

He further added that transit fees for all types of vessels would remain the same in 2021, including incentives and reductions provided in 2020.

Over the course of 2020, a total of 18,829 vessels with a net load of 1.17 billion tonnes crossed the Suez Canal, compared to 18,880 vessels with a net load of 1.21 billion tonnes in 2019.
