Qatar’s beIN Sports suspends service in Egypt

Cairo – Mubasher: Qatar-based beIN Media Group announced cutting its services in Egypt as of 8 January.

This comes as a result of a contract dispute with Cable Network Egypt (CNE), the Qatari group said on Twitter.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">beIN MEDIA GROUP is unable to provide services on CNE as of January 8th, 2019 as a result of CNE refusing to agree reasonable commercial terms. Viewers in Egypt can continue to enjoy beIN CONNECT services on smartphones and other devices by visiting: <a href="https://t.co/GLVgoWXUso">https://t.co/GLVgoWXUso</a> <a href="https://t.co/fSaDfzXyMp">pic.twitter.com/fSaDfzXyMp</a></p>&mdash; beIN MEDIA GROUP (@beINMEDIAGROUP) <a href="https://twitter.com/beINMEDIAGROUP/status/1082622429053149184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 8, 2019</a></blockquote>

In the same vein, CNE said in a statement that it was working to resolve the dispute with beIN “as soon as possible,” pointing out that “the subscribers will get the remaining of their fees if we failed to reach an agreement.”

beIN’s announcement comes following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said that Egypt would host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

In a vote held at a CAF executive committee in Senegal to determine the host of the tournament, Egypt won over South Africa by 16 votes to one, with one abstention, BBC Sport reported.

Egypt has only just six months to prepare for the continental major sports event, which is to be held in June.

It is worth noting that Egyptian Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was awarded 2018 African Player of the Year in a ceremony broadcast on Tuesday, 8 January.
