Qatar: labour reforms promise benefits

Mubasher: The Qatari ministry of administrative development labor and social affairs said on Monday that labour reforms will result in new and tangible benefits, and urged patience from critics.

Issa Al-Nuami, Qatari labour minister, said in a statement that the new law is the newest step taken by the government towards improving and protecting the rights of all workers in Qatar.

The minister also called upon the international community not to hurry in making assumptions and judgments regarding the new law.

Human rights groups criticized the new labour law, which will be effective beginning Tuesday, while Amnesty International called upon Qatar to cancel exit permits and ban passport confiscation, saying that the new law barely scratch the surface of an abusive system.
