PIF-owned OPDC to develop world’s 1st adventure tourism destination in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh – Mubasher: Oil Park Development Company (OPDC), a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), will carry out the world-first adventure tourism destination which will be located in Saudi Arabia under the name The Rig.

Promoting it as making adrenaline pumping with thrilling activities, The Rig will be built on an offshore platform in the Arabian Gulf to redefine the sea sports and leisure experience, based on its master plan that was revealed on 17 January 2024.

The project will also celebrate the legacy of Saudi Arabia’s rich oil and gas heritage, falling in line with PIF’s strategy and Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 objectives of contributing to the growth of the tourism sector. This will directly and indirectly endorse employment opportunities and diversify the economy.

The Rig will span a gross floor area exceeding 300,000 square metres, on which three hotels will be built to accommodate 800 keys, as well as 11 restaurants and more than 70 attractions and activities, besides a world-class marina and helipads. The project will be located 40 kilometres from the coastline, near Al Juraid Island and Berri Oil Field in the Arabian Gulf.

It further targets to have 900,000 annual visitors by 2032 representing domestic, regional, and international audiences, like adrenaline seekers, explorers, balanced holidaymakers, and relaxation seekers.

The Rig will feature “a wide variety of water activities, including a diving center, in addition to an amusement park, splash park, an E-sports center, an immersive theater and multipurpose arena.”
