Masdar partners with UAE’s ekar to provide first Tesla car-share

Mubasher: UAE’s ekar, the first and largest carshare operator in the Middle East, has collaborated with Abu Dhabi Future Company (Masdar) to offer the first Tesla car-share in the Middle East region, Zawya reported on Monday.

Five Tesla vehicles of models S and X has been provided by Masdar, while more electric vehicles will be added to the car-share fleet.

Customers can rent Tesla vehicles through the ekar application, as the vehicles will be collected from an exclusive Masdar City charging station in Abu Dhabi before returning them to the nearest station in order to be rented to the next customer.

Masdar’s executive director of Sustainable Real Estate, Yousef Baselaib said, “Masdar City installed the first rapid charging station for electric vehicles (EV) in the Middle East.”

CEO of ekar Middle East, Vilhelm Hedberg, commented, “Our vision at ekar is to have 5% of our fleet electric by 2020, to be fully electric by 2025, and fully autonomous by 2030.”

“In order to achieve this goal, it is crucial to align with innovators such as Masdar, a global clean energy pioneer and a company that is actively demonstrating how the business community can deliver on the sustainability agenda,” Hedberg added.

It is worth remarking that Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company fully owns the green energy company, Masdar which has invested over $8.5 billion in renewable energy projects inside and outside the UAE.
