Masdar City to launch world's first carbon-free project to extract water from air

UAE - Mubasher: Masdar and Khalifa University have partnered with AQUOVUM, the US-based water technologies company, to launch the world's first solar/thermal energy storage-powered project to extract water from air in Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.

The project will evaluate the performance of AQUOVUM’s large-format atmospheric water generation (AWG) technology to extract water from the atmosphere using a renewable energy source, according to a press release on Sunday.

Contributing to the UNSDG 6 goal, the carbon-free technology will create access to clean water, which is necessary for building a greener future.

The AWG technology will also contribute to a market, forecast to grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 25% across the world and 30% in the Middle East and Africa.

The Executive Director of Sustainable Real Estate at Masdar City, Abdulla Balalaa, said: "The AQUOVUM pilot will be installed at Khalifa University’s Masdar Institute Solar Platform in Masdar City and will operate from 100% renewable power, a process that is completely carbon neutral."

Meanwhile, the CEO of AQUOVUM Middle East, Mohamed Al Qubaisi, commented: "Technology that extracts clean water from the air in commercial volumes and operates using clean energy, will help in securing and developing all life sources and serving the national interests."
