Hitachi ABB to deploy latest technology to Gulf's first hydro power project

UAE - Mubasher: Switzerland-headquartered Hitachi ABB Power Grids will provide ANDRITZ Hydro, a supplier of electromechanical systems, with the latest grid connection and stabilisation technology for the Gulf region's first hydro pumped power project.

Located 140-km south-east of Dubai, the pumped storage hydroelectric power plant is under construction in the Hajar Mountains, according to a press release on Monday.

The Hatta station is being developed by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to generate up to 250 MW of clean, renewable, and flexible energy upon its operation in early 2024.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids will deliver two AC excitation systems, based on power electronic converters, to ensure variable speed operations of the reversible rotating units, in addition to an integrated solution to connect the plant to DEWA’s 132 kV network.

The pumped-storage hydroelectric power station comprises a lower reservoir with 1,716 million gallons of water capacity and an upper reservoir with up to 880 million gallons of water storage capacity.

The Managing Director of Hitachi ABB Power Grids in the UAE, Gulf, Near East and Pakistan, Mostafa AlGuezeri, said: "Hitachi ABB Power Grids can deliver engineered packages as well as advanced solutions to support the Emirate’s sustainability goals, accelerating the energy transition towards a carbon-neutral future with technologies that will benefit society."
