Emir of Medina launches new water projects

Riyadh – Mubasher: The Emir of Medina, Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, on Wednesday launched the works of the Saudi Irrigation Organization (SIO) in Medina with the participation of the Saudi Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Al Fadhli, and senior officials from the National Water Company (NWC).

The SIO is managing, operating, and maintaining irrigation for farms in Medina using the most advanced irrigation methods through tertiary recycling of treated water in plants of the environment and water ministry, in addition to groundwater after appropriately extracting it from carefully thought out spaces in compliance with the known specifications and standards.

Within this framework, the Saudi Emir has put the cornerstone to complete the project of using treated water in the first stage, according to an official statement.

The Emir reiterated the importance of harnessing the project’s capabilities in line with the SIO works in an attempt to achieve water sustainability and protect the environment and palm trees farms citywide.

The project of reusing treated water will be implemented on four consecutive stages and aims to preserve the strategic well water inventory and ration dependence on it, encourage farmers in the agricultural development system while generating economic benefits, raising environment protection levels, and lowering surface water flooding levels.

For his part, the environment minister said these projects are based on the directives of the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in the realisation of the National Vision 2030.

A number of vital projects will be implemented in Medina in collaboration with the private sector, the minister concluded.
