El-Sisi: Egypt’s water security is a red line that affects the entire region

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s President Abdelfattah El-Sisi said on Tuesday that Egypt is dealing with the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam crisis wisely and patiently, warning that Egypt’s water security is a red line and crossing it would destabilize the entire region.

The aggressive action is always ugly. It has a huge impact for years and is never forgotten, El-Sisi told reporters on the sidelines of his visit to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) in Ismailia.

Egypt began by choosing the path of negotiations and remains serious about negotiating in a way that ensures a win-win situation but in accordance with the international laws and standards governing transboundary waters, the president emphasized, expressing his hopes that over the coming weeks a binding legal agreement could be reached on filling and operating the Ethiopian dam.

No one will be able to take a drop of Egypt’s water,” the president reiterated.

Egypt’s water is untouchable. This is a red line for us, and crossing it would affect the stability of the entire region in a way that no one can imagine. No one is away from our capabilities,” El-Sisi warned.

The president’s visit to Suez Canal came one day after the Egyptian canal was reopened following the successful refloating of the huge Ever Given container ship that blocked for six days the waterway that carries about 12% of global trade.
