Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s loss-making Cairo Metro will raise the ticket’s prices starting from July 2018, according to al-Ahram Newspaper.
The metro’s current fare is set to be tripled for many commuters, the newspaper highlighted.
The base price of the ticket will be set at EGP 2 for the first nine metro stations, on which the price will be increased by an additional pound for nine more stations, the newspaper reported, citing transport minister Hisham Arafat as saying.
As per commuters who take the whole line from start to finish, a maximum fare of EGP 6 will be charged, but discounted rates for civil servants and students will be maintained.
Earlier this month, the spokesperson of the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) Ahmed Abdel Hady said that Cairo Metro’s fare will rise right after the inauguration of Cairo Metro Line 3’s new stations, which coincides with completing the installation of Cairo Metro Line 1’s turnstiles.
The present price of Cairo Metro’s ticket is EGP 2, under which commuters can cover an unlimited number of stops, including different lines.
In July, the Egyptian minister of transport Hesham Arafat said that the price of Cairo Metro ticket will raise at a range between EGP 2, EGP 3, and EGP 4 in accordance with the of stations by 2018.
On 23 March, Egypt doubled the price of Cairo’s metro ticket after getting the Cabinet approval.
