Egypt spends EGP 145bn on healthcare sector

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt's total expenditure on the healthcare sector amounts to around EGP 145 billion now, of which 62% is spent by citizens, a top official has said.

The new healthcare insurance system is separated from the country’s public treasury to maintain its sustainability, deputy finance minister Mohamed Maait said in an interview on DMC channel.

The new system depends on three authorities: the first one receives funds, the second provides services in public and private hospitals, and the third is a supervisory authority specialised in setting standards and granting licences, Maait highlighted.

The individual’s share in the current healthcare insurance system amounts to about EGP 130, but in the new system, it will stand at EGP 1,700, he stressed.

Maait further noted that the new system will cover all governorates in the country within 15 years at a total cost of up to EGP 600 billion.
