Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian government has spent EGP 1.7 trillion to develop the transport sector during 2014-2024, Minister of Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, stated during the recent inauguration of railways projects in Upper Egypt.
The country received 110 new locomotives in 2020 alone as part of the national railways development plan, in addition to signing deals to obtain 150 more vehicles.
Egypt aims to have 1,250 locomotives under the supervision of the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) by 2030, El-Wazir remarked.
The Arab republic plans to have 13,100 kilos of railways lines upgraded by 2024.
The minister added that Egypt’s railways have transported 1.1 million passengers on a daily basis during 2021, with a plan to increase the daily number to 1.5 million and 2 million passengers in 2024 and 2030, respectively.
