Egypt signs two protocols to localise, develop the automotive industry

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Minister of Public Business Sector, Hisham Tawfik, witnessed the signing of two cooperation protocols between the Engineering Automotive Manufacturing Co. (EAMCO) and El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company, and Egypt’s Brightskies to localise and develop the automotive industry in Egypt.

EAMCO and El Nasr Automotive are subsidiaries of the Egyptian Company for Metal Constructions. (Metalco), one of the Public Business Sector ministry’s companies.

The first protocol was signed between EAMCO and Brightskies and will see the development of an electric bus model. EAMCO will produce all of the bus’ components while Brightskies will develop the battery and the electrical drive system, according to a statement on Thursday.

The second protocol, inked between El Nasr Automotive and Brightskies, stipulates the conduction of feasibility studies to establish a research and development (R&D) centre for batteries, and control and electrical drive systems for electric cars.

The two agreements reflect an ambitious step to localise the Egyptian technological component in the future automotive industry.

Previously, El Nasr Automotive signed an agreement with China’s Dongfeng Motor Corporation to produce the first Egyptian electric car, E-70, by the first quarter (Q1) of 2022.
