Egypt Today: The Egyptian government has signed two cooperation protocols aimed at auditing and standardizing the country’s export and import figures across various national data-issuing entities.
According to a statement from the Cabinet, these protocols are designed to ensure data consistency, improve accuracy, and enhance the quality of official statistics, while aligning with global standards for calculating macroeconomic indicators.
These agreements follow the work of two committees: one, created under Prime Ministerial Decree No. 1887 of 2023, focuses on unifying export data, while the other, formed under Decree No. 3610 of 2024, addresses import data.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that the signing of the protocols marks a strategic shift towards high-value tradable sectors, aimed at expanding Egypt’s export base, building trust in Egyptian exports, and facilitating their access to global markets.
He also emphasized that these actions are in line with ongoing structural reforms designed to maximize the added value of foreign trade-related products and services.
Furthermore, Madbouly pointed out that the establishment of a unified export-import database will strengthen macroeconomic stability by improving policy predictability and contributing to a more dynamic and resilient economy. This, he added, will support achieving growth targets, enhance investor confidence, and increase foreign currency inflows.
Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, explained that the protocols are part of Egypt's efforts to adopt international statistical classifications for export and import data. This includes data on exported and imported goods, goods entering through border ports, and re-exported goods.
Al-Mashat highlighted that the aim is to provide accurate, comprehensive statistical data that supports informed decision-making. This will be achieved by coordinating efforts across government entities responsible for foreign-trade data and subjecting this data to standardized auditing processes that ensure its integrity, transparency, and reliability.
She also stressed that the protocols are aligned with Egypt’s broader economic development strategy and Vision 2030. To ensure data accuracy, she noted the need for a robust technical and regulatory environment that guarantees consistent data standards, periodic auditing, and seamless data exchange through an integrated electronic system.
This system will support better policymaking by ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data used in decision-making.
