Egypt’s parliament approves new customs law

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s parliament approved a new customs bill that streamlines procedures as the country moves forward to digitise its clearance system.

The new law includes new streamlined procedures, including creating a new system for settling customs disputes by allowing customs payers to submit an appeal to an administrative entity before resorting to arbitration, the Minister of Finance, Mohamed Maait, said in a statement on Tuesday.

In addition, goods will be only be temporarily stored at ports, Maait added.

Under the new law, all medical supplies and equipment imported by university and governmental hospitals will be exempt from customs duties.

Maait further revealed that an electronic cargo tracking system will be created.

The new law, approved by the parliament on Monday, is still pending approval of the President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
