Egypt's non-oil trade deficit widens to $30.7bn in nine months

Cairo - Mubasher: Egypt's non-oil balance of trade recorded a deficit of $30.7 billion during the first nine months of the fiscal year (FY) 2020/2021, up by $3.5 billion or 12.7% year-on-year (YoY) from $27.3 billion, according to data by the Ministry of Finance. 

Payments for non-oil imports rose by $4.5 billion to $45.5 billion, while receipts from non-oil exports increased by $1 billion to $14.5 billion. 

Top imports included disinfectant machines, car spare parts, and locomotives, whereas main exports included home appliances and cables. 

During the nine-month period ended 31 March, the country's balance of payments (BoP) registered a surplus of $1.8 billion, compared to a deficit of $5.1 billion in the year-ago period.  

The current account deficit widened to $13.3 billion in the first nine months of FY20/21, compared to $7.3 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier.
