Egypt’s monthly electronic government receipts surge to EGP 4bn post-COVID

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s monthly electronic government receipts jumped from $1 billion to $4 billion after the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

These receipts grew by 250% on an annual basis, reflecting the strong performance of the e-payment system, the Minister of Finance, Mohamed Maait, said in a statement on Wednesday.

About 37,000 Meeza cards have been issued in the first and second pilot phases as part of the country’s efforts towards digital transformation.

The ministry is working on operating 5 million Meeza cards in the upcoming period, he added.

The e-receipts system is aimed at saving 25% of the cost of currency issuance and 50% of the time of the service, in addition to streamlining procedures.
