Egypt likely to see 5% economic expansion in FY21/22 – IMF official

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt is among the few countries that achieved positive growth during the pandemic thanks to economic reforms, the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mahmoud Mohieldin, said.

The country's growth is expected to accelerate from 2.7% to 5% at the end of fiscal year (FY) 2021/2022, Mohieldin added during a webinar organised by the Egyptian Junior Business Association (EJB) on Wednesday.

Mohieldin stressed the importance of adopting flexible economic policies, encouraging labourers to enter fast-growing sectors, and expanding social security coverage.

The Middle East region is expected to grow by 1% this year and 3% in two years, he noted.

Meanwhile, the US economy is expected to expand by 6% at the end of 2021, while China and Europe are forecast to grow by 8% and 3-4%, respectively.
