Egypt launches trial operations at Sokhna's new container terminal

Egypt Today: The trial operations of the Hutchison Container Terminal kicked off Monday at Ain Sokhna Port as part of a major Red Sea-Mediterranean corridor.

The terminal, whose trial operations were overseen by Minister of Transport Kamel El Wazir, is the first to be completed under a major development project at Ain Sokhna Port, following the finalization of its infrastructure. The project is part of a plan to turn Egypt into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade.

Red Sea Gateway and Logistics Corridor

Ain Sokhna Port is a critical link in the integrated Sokhna–Dekheila Logistics Corridor, connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, respectively.

The development is set to make Sokhna the largest port on the Red Sea, significantly boosting Egypt's share of the global transit market, all according to a modern plan that rivals the world's most sophisticated ports and serves regional and international trade movements.

The massive expansion covers a total area of 29 square kilometers and includes:

 * Marine Works: Construction of 5 new basins and 18 kilometers of berths (18m depth).

 * Storage: 9.2 million square meters of handling yards.

 * Logistics Zone: 5.2 square kilometers for logistics activities.

 * Connectivity: 30 km of railway lines linked to the national Electric Express Train system.

The collaboration with major global firms like Hutchison is part of the Ministry of Transport’s plan to attract the largest shipping lines and double the port’s operational capacity, ensuring the attraction and frequency of the largest number of vessels to Egyptian ports and expanding transit trade activity.
