Egypt invests EGP 160bn in housing, utility projects in seven years

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Minister of Housing, Assem El-Gazzar, reviewed the achievements made in the housing and utility sectors since President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi took office in 2014.

The ministry has invested EGP 160 billion in completed and under-construction housing and utility projects in the last seven years, El-Gazzar said in a statement on Tuesday.

A total of EGP 390 billion has been invested in about 900,000 completed and under-construction social housing and middle-income housing units.

In addition, the country built 195,275 units in developed slums at a cost of EGP 23.9 billion and is currently building 50,778 units in under-development areas at a cost of EGP 15.7 billion.

The ministry also developed several drinking water and sewage projects, raising the urban sewage coverage rate to 96% and the rural sewage coverage rate to 40%, compared to 12% in 2014.

A total of 279 drinking water projects have been established with a capacity of 11 million cubic metres per day at a cost of EGP 61.4 billion, while 98 projects are being constructed with a capacity of 2.3 million cubic metres per day at a cost of EGP 16.3 billion.

The ministry also built three national roads at a cost of EGP 8 billion and 11 main roads at a cost of 5.9 billion and is currently constructing nine main roads at a cost of EGP 14 billion.

As for fourth generation cities, tens of thousands of residential units are being built in the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein City.
