Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry, Nevine Gamea, announced a plan to replace a total of 250,00 cars with new ones operating on natural gas over the coming three years.
A total of 70,000 cars are planned to be replaced in the first year, 90,000 in the second year, and another 90,000 in the third year, in addition to converting 55,000 taxis and passenger cars and 15,000 microbuses to run on natural gas, Gamea added during Go Green Exhibition on Monday.
The exhibition will see the signing of new funding agreements between the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA) and Cargas and Gastec to provide a funding of EGP 200 million to equip cars with dual-fuel engines.
The MSMEDA will finance the conversion of 150,000 cars until 2023, at a cost of EGP 1.2 billion, she added, noting that it was agreed to convert 50,000-75,000 cars every year at a cost of EGP 400-600 million.
The government also asked nine companies to locally produce 12 models of natural gas-powered cars and microbuses.
