Egypt aims to boost renewable energy contribution to 42% by 2035

Cairo – Mubasher: Wind Atlas shows that Egypt has the largest electric capacity in the MENA region with 30 megawatts (MW) in wind energy and 60 MW in solar energy, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, said.

The country is expected to boost the renewable energy's contribution to the energy mix to 20% by the end of 2021, ahead of the scheduled target date of the end of 2022, Shaker added in a statement on Wednesday.

Egypt plans to increase this contribution to 42% by 2035, he revealed.

The electric capacity is expected to reach 6,379 MW by the end of the current year from the current 5,878 MW.

Shaker revealed that a ministerial committee is currently studying the addition of green hydrogen as a source of energy in the near future. Egypt’s Energy strategy 2035 will be updated to include green hydrogen.

In January, Egypt signed an agreement with Germany’s Siemens to begin studies for the development of a green hydrogen production project in Egypt.

This came during the minister’s meeting with Alok Sharma, President of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference.
