EGA completes 1st section of $3.3bn alumina refinery

Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) on Wednesday announced that it has completed the commissioning of the first major section of its under-construction alumina refinery at Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi.

Completing the commissioning and testing equipment and systems before operating the calcination section makes it the first of the four major sections of $3.3 billion Al Taweelah alumina refinery to be ready for production, the UAE's largest industrial company outside oil and gas, said in a statement.

EGA, which is one of the world's top five producers, is working on the commissioning of the other section of Al Taweelah alumina refinery.

The first section is expected to become operational during the first half of 2019.

Al Taweelah alumina refinery comprises 9,500 instruments, 222 tanks, enough piping to stretch from Abu Dhabi to Muscat, and cabling that would reach from Abu Dhabi to Cairo, the statement added.

As for the calcination section, it contains more than 1,700 instruments and over 100 motors.

“Commissioning is the last stage of this massive project to develop EGA’s and the UAE’s first alumina refinery. The safe completion of commissioning of the calcination section is an important milestone,” Abdulla Kalban, managing director and CEO of EGA, commented.

It is worth noting that Al Taweelah alumina refinery is considered the first alumina refinery to be built in the UAE and only the second in the Middle East.
