EGA, Mubadala, Dubal Holding complete first H-Class gas turbine to power aluminium smelter

UAE – Mubasher: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), Mubadala, and Dubal Holding have launched the Siemens Energy H-class gas turbine at the UAE’s most efficient power plant, being developed at EGA’s Jebel Ali site.

The H-class gas turbine will enhance the efficiency of power generation at EGA, in line with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, according to a press release on Wednesday.

The UAE Energy Strategy aims to cut the country’s carbon emissions of power generation by 70% and raise energy efficiency by 40%.

The other facilities in the AED 1 billion power plant will be completed in the upcoming months to generate over 600 megawatts of electricity.

The whole project, being set up by JA Power & Water Co which is a joint venture between Mubadala and Dubal Holding, is forecast to be completed in the summer.

EGA seeks to buy power from the joint venture for 25 years following commissioning.

Hence, the new power block would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from EGA's power-generation and aluminium-smelting operations at Jebel Ali by about 10%.

The CEO of EGA, Abdulnasser bin Kalban, said: “This new power plant will improve the efficiency of power generation at EGA even further. That means lower costs in natural gas, and lower costs to the planet.”

The Managing Director of Siemens Energy in the Middle East and UAE, Dietmar Siersdorfer, commented: “This is a landmark project, as the first Siemens H-class globally to power an aluminium smelter, the most efficient power plant in the UAE and the most efficient in EGA’s fleet.”
