Dubai sees 42 government entities joining Paperless Strategy

UAE - Mubasher: Smart Dubai’s Dubai Paperless Strategy has added 42 government entities to its list, surpassing their target to reduce paper consumption by 50% during the first six months of joining.

The strategy has saved over AED 1.09 billion, 11.6 million hours of labor, and 30,804 trees that could be used to produce paper by October 2020, according to a press release on Sunday.

This announcement was made during the 40th GITEX Technology Week, being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre on 6-10 December 2020.

The strategy has passed through several phases, with each phase registering a new group of government entities, each of which has exceeded its six-month objective to decrease paper consumption by 50%.

The Dubai Paperless Strategy was formulated, based on legislation and internal policies allowing for digital transactions, digitisation and automation of processes through digital systems, and full integration between entities.

The six-entity group one that has joined the strategy in February 2018 include the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Police, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and Department of Economic Development.

This group has cut paper consumption by 57% by the end of 2018.

Meanwhile, the eight-entity group two, including Dubai Courts and Dubai Municipality has cut its paper consumption by 57.5% since its joining in February 2019.

In May 2020, nine new government entities joined the group five at the strategy to cut paper consumption by 50% by December 2020.

The Assistant Director General of Smart Dubai and CEO of the Dubai Data Establishment, Younus Al Nasser, commented: "As the government entity tasked with embracing new technologies and using them to make people’s lives easier and happier, Smart Dubai was entrusted with spearheading the effort to implement the Strategy across all Dubai Government entities."
