DP World unveils up to $1bn investments for port in Tanzania

UAE – Mubasher: DP World signed a 30-year concession deal with the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to operate and upgrade the Dar es Salaam Port that links the East African country with global markets.

The partnership aims to modernise the Dar es Salaam Port to enhance transport and logistics services throughout Tanzania and its hinterland, according to a press release.

DP World announced an initial investment exceeding $250 million to upgrade the port, noting that the investment could rise to $1 billion during the concession period, alongside hinterland logistics projects.

This investment will reflect positively on Tanzania’s socio-economic development, as it will contribute to job creation and boost access to products and services.

The Dar es Salaam Port will connect the hinterland of sub-Saharan Africa through a network of roads, highways, railways, and dedicated freight corridors. It will back the growing demand for logistics solutions across the continent and link businesses in the region with other global markets.

The logistics company will join forces with the TPA and the port’s stakeholders to accelerate and evolve the process of cargo clearing and planning, which will reinforce Dar es Salaam’s role as the maritime gateway for green energy metals.

Meanwhile, the Dubai-based firm will make potential investments in temperature-controlled storage to bolster Tanzania’s agricultural sector as well as greater connections to rail-linked logistics.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “The development will deliver trade opportunities for the region, connecting East Africa and broader sub-Saharan Africa with global markets, driving economic growth, job creation, enhanced access to products and service, and creating value for all our stakeholders.”

“Alongside other ports that we operate, this concession agreement marks another milestone in our collective efforts to leverage DP World’s global and local expertise to enhance the region’s supply chain to support the economic growth of the entire continent,” Bin Sulayem added.

Makame Mbarawa, Tanzania’s Minister of Transport, commented: “With DP World's expertise the port will play an important role in supporting the creation of direct and indirect employment in various sectors such as transportation, distribution, and supply chain.”

Plasduce Mkeli Mbossa, Director-General of Tanzania Ports Authority, underlined: "This project will create significant value for end-users and help the government achieve its goal of reducing logistics costs."
