Cisco to open smart city initiative in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh – Mubasher: US-based technology conglomerate Cisco has announced plans to launch a smart city initiative during the coming period in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

This project, which has been piloted for nine months, is considered a part of the kingdom’s plans to expand in digital transformation in line with National Transformation Program (NTP) and the Saudi Vision 2030.

In the event that the smart city initiative is successful, Cisco says it will launch the project in other cities in the kingdom.

Cisco’s smart city pilot was implemented in Olaya, a densely populated city in the kingdom.

“[Olaya] district is currently set with smart parking, lighting, cleaning services, and networks of sensors for a more sustainable way of living,” Saudi Gazette reported, citing Cisco’s managing director for Saudi Arabia Haytham Al-Ohali as saying.

Cisco is currently collaborating with the Gulf country to provide digital services, especially in healthcare, broadband, city WiFi, and education.

The US-based technology firm plans to offer services in cloud storage, transportation, energy, and smart hajj in the coming years.

In March, Saudi Telecom Company (STC) signed a deal with Cisco Systems to develop fifth generation (5G) networks across the kingdom.
