UAE - Mubasher: Germany's BMW Group will source CelestiAL aluminium, made with the solar power, from Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) to become the first customer for EGA’s low carbon CelestiAL, according to a press release on Tuesday.
EGA, the first company in the world to produce aluminium using solar power, will provide BMW with 43,000 tonnes per year of CelestiAL aluminium, annually cutting BMW's carbon emissions by 222,000 tonnes.
EGA has started making CelestiAL aluminium earlier this month from electricity generated electricity at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.
Since 2013, EGA has supplied metal to BMW Group for use in the German carmaker’s engines and other parts.
The CEO of EGA, Abdulnasser bin Kalban, commented: "Solar aluminium is a step forward – using a natural and abundant source of energy in our desert environment to make a metal that is vital to our planet’s future."
BMW AG Board Member for Purchasing and Supplier Network, Andreas Wendt, said: "In EGA, we have found a strong partner who values sustainable development just as much as we do."
